Rules for becoming a good motivational speaker

If you want to become the best at motivational speaking, you need to know the rules to becoming a good motivational speaker.  Of course, “rules” is a big word, and it may be better described as suggestions or hints and tips.  Here are ten steps you may want to implement if you want to become a really good and inspiring motivational speaker.

  1. Think of the special message that you have that cannot be found elsewhere.  You can build on existing messages, but it is all about you delivering something completely new.
  2. Consider having a mentor.  You grow by learning, and learning from someone who is at a further stage than you can only do you good.
  3. Think carefully about your target audience.  Generally, people would suggest starting small and building from there.
  4. Practice your skills for public speaking.  A motivational speaker talks to entire rooms full of people and is able to grab the attention even of those right the way at the back.  There are many examples of fantastic speakers and you can learn a lot from those.
  5. Think about your venue.  The venue, how comfortable it is, how good it looks, what it offers, is hugely important.  You will not be able to motivate anybody if all they can think about is when they can get out of a room.
  6. Advertise yourself wherever you can.  Use social media, blogs, email campaigns, posters, the radio, television and more.
  7. Sell your skills.  This is something most of us don’t want to do, but it can work to your advantage.  If you work for a company rather than yourself to start with, you can learn a lot and you may even be able to take some of the clients with you when you do start fto work for you.
  8. Understand and listen to your audience.  Feedback is not negative criticism.  Instead, it is positive feedback that you can use to improve yourself and you need to make sure that you do exactly that.
  9. Learn to write.  Motivational speakers also hand out a lot of literature and you have to be able to write things properly.  If you can’t write, get someone on your side who can do it for you.
  10. Be flexible.  You have to be able to change yourself at a moment’s notice if that is what is required of you.
