Positive People

For many years I have talked about the MOOD HOOVERS – those people in our lives that no matter what the situation will absorb your positive energy and suck up any happy feeling you have. Many of you have your own names for these people, ranging from “Energy Vampires” and “Dream Stealers” to “The Negatives” and “Parasites”.  We all know they are around us more often than we would like them to be.

By contrast, what about the positive people in our lives? Those people that just exude energy and dynamism- I am still looking for the perfect phrase to describe them. These  are the people who you always look forward to hearing from or meeting up with; you see their name pop up on your phone and it makes you feel good and puts a smile on your face or you always hunt them out at an event as you know they are great to be around. This has nothing to do with love and romance, these are people whom you respect, admire and feel good to be involved with.

Picture someone now who you know you love to be around because of the positive effect they have on your mood, energy and demeanour – what exactly have they got and what would you call it? They might be a friend at the rugby club, a mum from the school run or the MD of that really creative and clever new business; they have got that “va-va-voom” as the French might call it.

What effect can these people have on you? Do you really become more positive just by being around more positive and energetic people? There are so many books nowadays on this subject many of which have had dramatic and life changing impact on the reader:  “The Law of Attraction”, ”The Secret”,  ”Life Purpose”. However, reading a book won’t easily change your long-term activities or success, just as standing next to a positive person will not make you henceforth more dynamic or fun to be around. It all comes down to Action yet again – nothing happens without taking action.  My favourite phrase to describe these positive people at the moment is “Eternal Dynamos” – people that are endlessly making things happen for them and all around them. Spending more time with an “Eternal Dynamo” will have a positive influence on you, you can pick up behaviours, activities and very importantly attitude, which can motivate and inspire you to act and do things differently.

Not forgetting of course the fact that we can all, on a bad day, be a Mood Hoover to others, we can also be that “Tonic”, that ”Dynamo” of constant energy when we are truly on our game. I know there are many occasions when I can and do achieve so much more when I am in the zone, I ooze positivity and I can carry people along with me and because I am flying at full speed others want to get involved. This is the direct opposite of the Mood Hoover when due to fatigue, stress, outside influences I bring people down just as you do – we must find the way that works for us all to change that without negatively affecting others in the process.

Moods come and go, energy ebbs and flows, there are times when we all need to manage the impact we have on others for good or not so. My challenge to you is over the twelve months, seek out these “Dynamos”, learn from them, learn about their activities and their attitude and most importantly of all take action.
